I have never really been a Chelsea Grin fan. That isn’t a bad thing on their part, they were just a band I never really bothered listening to when they were the top dogs in the metalcore/deathcore scene. Because of this, I honestly had no idea what to expect when they played Revolution in Amityville, New York March 6th on their Desolation Of Eden tour with Oceans Ate Alaska, Lorna Shore, and Wage War. I honestly still don’t know what to make of Chelsea Grin’s sound or live show, but it was certainly a memorable night.

Wage War, one of my current favorite bands in the metalcore scene, took the stage first. The crowd reaction during their set alone shows how much this band has connected with people on their debut album Blueprints. Their live set sounded massive, ready to be played in front of the thousands, just like that album. Although I was disappointed that the band did not play what was my favorite and in my opinion the biggest song off of the album “Twenty One,” most likely due to clean vocalist/guitarist Cody Quistad being ill, their set proved Wage War as a solid upcoming act to watch out for.

Up next was New Jersey deathcore band Lorna Shore. I was not too familiar with them before this show and although their set wasn’t the greatest, it was still an enjoyable watch. A highlight of the set had to be when Oceano frontman Adam Warren took to the stage with them to deliver some guest vocals. It was unexpected and the crowd loved it.

Oceans Ate Alaska is a band that is starting to grow on me. I wasn’t a huge fan of their Lost Isles record, but the two times I have seen them live they put on a rousing performance. Their set was even tighter than when I saw them with blessthefall last year. My only hope for OAA is that they can step it up on their next record, as they are some fantastic musicians when it comes to playing a live set.

Finally up was Chelsea Grin. Chelsea Grin’s performance was for the fans. I feel that I can’t give the best review of Chelsea Grin here, as this tour was specifically for the dedicated fans who have been following them since the beginning of their careers. The crowd truly seemed to appreciate everything Chelsea Grin played. Their music may not be for me, but I can highly respect a band that decided to give back to the fans with a tour like this.
